ISN AT THE TDF – STAGE 10: The Gorilla Came Alive (English & Hebrew)

The legendary sprinter from Israel Start-Up Nation, with 156 victories on his palmaris, was not that visible in the Tour de France 2020. Yet. However, today, at stage 10, everyone saw why Andre Greipel is one of the greatest cyclists of his generation.

After a stressful and super-fast day on the saddle (46.2 km/h average), full of crashes and nervousness because of the wind, his teammates – especially Tom van Asbroeck and Hugo Hofstetter – brought Greipel in a great position in the last few hundred meters. The gorilla finished sixth.

“I experienced nine tough days on the saddle”, said the German sprinter who crashed in the opening stage of the Tour de France. “I fought against my injuries and an illness. I continued, and – finally – today I felt like a normal bike rider again.”

He continued: “Unfortunately I started my sprint a little bit from the back, and that’s the reason I could not win today. This is just a start. I take it step by step, but I am not content with sixth.”

There were many crashes in today’s hectic stage. Nils Politt hit the deck for the second time this TDF and was left with lots of pain in his shoulder. The German, who finished in the same group as Guy Niv, was taken for x-ray scans. Also, Dan Martin was involved in a tumble.

Niv himself (and it’s not easy to race on flats on a windy day – for climbers) played an important role in the team during the beginning of race by getting Elite bottles and OTE bars and gels for his teammates.

גרייפל סיים יום לחוץ ומהיר (46.2 קמ”ש בממוצע) ועמוס בהתרסקויות, במקום הששי אמנם, אבל עם הרבה בטחון להמשך. ״עברתי גהינום בשלבי העליות בימים האחרונים, עם חבלות ההתרסקות, וקצת חולה, אבל ידעתי שאני חייב לעבור עד שאוכל להגיע משלבי הספרינטים ולהחזיר לקבוצה כגמולה”, אמר גרייפל. ״היום חזרתי להיות רוכב נורמלי. לצערי התחלתי את הספרינט קצת מאחור ולכן לא יכולתי לנצח משם, אבל זו ההתחלה. אני לא מסתפק במקום שישי״.

הקבוצה סבלה מהתרסקויות היום. נילס פוליט נחת על האספלט בפעם השניה בטור ונחבל קשה בכתפו. הוא יילקח לבדיקות. את הסיום עשה עם גיא ניב שסייע לו מעט בקילומטרים האחרונים. ניב עבר בהצלחה יום לא פשוט למטפס. שלבים שטוחים מהירים וקשים, אבל ניב התמקם מצויין כל השלב והיה שוב ספק המים של חבריו .
