It was a good day for Michael Woods in the Tour de Suisse. Even though two riders went up the road in stage 5, Woods managed to claim a spot on the podium and moved up 14 places in the general classification.

“This is promising for the next few days,” Woods said after the finish.

ISN’s climber was brought in perfect position by his helpers, including a strong James Piccoli and an impressive Guillaume Boivin. On the penultimate climb, Woods showed he was one of the strongest riders in the group of favorites.

He proved it again on the final climb, on which he did a big part of the chasing of the two stronger riders who broke away. Then he sprinted to third place, relatively easily, in the last few hundred meters of the race.

Woods: “My ride was really good today, and I felt really strong. I am a bit disappointed that I was not able to cover the attacks of Carapaz and Fuglsang. I was not strong enough mentally for that, but I am happy with how my legs are and I am looking forward to the next few stages.”

The Canadian moved up into the top-10 in GC of the Tour de Suisse after his terrific efforts in stage 5. The next few days in Switzerland are all about climbing skills which are, as you can imagine, completely to Woodsy’s liking.
